Working Title

Because I pretty much have my own computer now, I kind of feel obligated to write something. I'm not sure exactly what I'm going to say. Big surprise there, right?

So, my sister has been staying with us for the last week. She's visiting from Maui. I like having her around. And it's not just because she compulsively cleans my house and watches my kids. I really just enjoy having her around. She's my best friend and I can be goofy with her in a way I can't really be around anyone else. Of course that's because she's known me her whole life and we've got tons of inside jokes and dirt on each other. She's a sweet girl and I'm so blessed to have her as my sister. I miss having her around all the time.

Ah, I'd finally gotten settled and Moses starts crying. That kid is like clockwork. We really need to get him trained to sleep through the night. I suppose it's kind of my fault. He's so cuddly.

I suppose I ought to wrap this up for now. It's later than I thought. But I do want to tell one cute story before I forget about it completely.

A few weeks ago Joseph and I were trying to get Akiko to eat her vegetables at dinner. One of us finally said, "You know superheroes and princesses eat their vegetables." And Akiko tilts her head and says, "But I not a superhero or a princess. I'm just a little girl named Akiko." What could we say to that one? It was so funny, we let her get away with not eating them that time. At least the girl loves broccoli. She'll eat bowlful after bowlful.

Been a while

Heather, you're my inspiration.

My friend Heather has this awesome blog. I'd figure out how to link you to it, but not right now. I just want to post a quick blog to let you know I'm still alive.

We're moving soon. In a little over a week. I'm starting to feel a little overwhelmed. Joseph will be out of town that weekend, so I won't worry about moving all the big stuff till he gets home. It seems like it was easier moving from Hawaii to Utah last year than it is just moving down the street. I hate moving. All the packing and unpacking and not knowing exactly where everything is. This time especially because some of our stuff is in St. George, some of it at my mom's and some of it at my dad's. What a pain.

That's getting me depressed and slightly anxious.

The kids are great. Yes, now we have two. Of course, Moses is six months old already. And Akiko turned three last April. They grow so fast. I just uploaded the picture. It didn't quite turn out where I wanted it. Oh well, there they are. I better post this now so Aki can look at herself. Perhaps I'll write more once Joseph gets home from work and I'll have time to sit and think about what I want to write.

"Bi-per!"

Just a few minutes ago, I was sitting here at the computer reading an article and Akiko came in.

"Uh oh, Mommy! Poo-poo!" ("Poo-poo" means she's wet herself and "Eeww! Cucka!" means she's has, in fact, pooped.)

So she proceeds to take her diaper off and I tell her to go throw it in the garbage and get a new diaper. She's very good at following directions like that.

A little while later, she runs into the living room to Joseph, holds up the diaper and yells excitedly, "Bi-per!"

Joseph tells her, "Go give it to Mommy and she'll help you put in on."

I didn't hear what he said but seconds later, Aki is at the office door, once again holds up the diaper and yells with no less enthusiasm than the first, "Bi-per!"

Of course, I say to her, "Go ask Daddy to help you put it on." She gets all excited and I hear her running back to Joseph yelling, "Bi-per!"

He, once more, tells her to ask Mommy to help. At this point, Aki lowers the diaper, gets a confused look on her face (probably rather frustrated by now too) and asks meekly, "bi-per?"

I'm almost surprised she didn't ask him with a "please" but Joseph decided that he would finally help the poor girl put her diaper on.

Potty Training and Pregnancy

I'm still trying to figure out this blog thing. I think I'm doing okay. I've had a lot on my mind this week, as opposed to last week. Here goes:

What do you know? The day after (or maybe it was the day after that) I posted my shiny new blog, the nausea kicks in. I wanted to do something special for Joseph's birthday last Monday, but we didn't really do anything special. I did bake him a really yummy devil's food cake though. I could only handle a small piece and I think he and Aki ended up eating it all.

So I've felt crappy all week. Every day a little worst than the former. In fact, today I spent all day in bed crying and trying not to throw up. Luckily, Akiko was being a wonderful little girl. Well she usually is a wonderful little girl, but she was especially so today. Even when Joseph was gone and it was just her and me. I only got out of bed because Christian and Megan had rented a movie that we've been wanting to see and invited us over for a family group date night. I ended up eating too much popcorn, jelly beans and M&Ms and left feeling worse than before. And that was after a filling meal that Joseph made for me. One week down 6 or 7 or 8 left to go.

I don't remember how I handled the first trimester with Aki. It seemed easier. But maybe it just seems worse this time because I'm in the middle of it and when it's over, I'll look back and think "What was I complaining about? It wasn't all that bad?" Besides, I've got to admit, post-pregnancy recovery is much harder than the nausea.

So, I borrowed a potty training book from the library (which I always remember is overdue once it's too late to do anything about). It pretty much says that we need to be consistent and to keep taking her to the bathroom every couple hours. That was hard for me at first, because before I got pregnant, I only went to the bathroom twice, maybe three times during the day. Now I go more often, but it's usually a sudden urge and I don't have time to coax her into the bathroom with me. Aki only likes to sit on her potty if your in there with her sitting on the big one. Besides, I don't feel like I have the energy to be consistent about it. Today, however, she did wipe her bum with the toilet paper instead of her nose like she usually does. Then she took some more paper and wiped her nose, but I still count that as progress.

I thought I had more to say about all of this. My mind has drawn a blank. I know later tonight I'll be lying in bed thinking, "Oh yeah! That's what I was going to say!" I hate moments like that. It reminds me of that Seinfeld episode where George is being heckled by that guy at work about the ocean wanting it's shrimp back. And George only thinks of the perfect thing to say once the guy has been transferred out of state. Of course what he had to say wasn't even a great comeback, but I think you get the point.

Oh well, it's getting late anyway. We've missed church twice in a row now and I would like to get up early enough to go this time. Aki keeps asking to "Go turch?" all the time. She suddenly loves it. I really just think she likes being around kids her age instead of her boring old parents. Even if it's just for a couple hours.

...So I said, "Why not?"

Joseph said I should start blogging. Hee hee. The spellcheck says that "blogging" and "spellcheck" are spelled incorrectly. They seemed correct to me. I'm not going to fix them.

I don't feel I have that much to say. And usually when I want to write my feelings down, I'd do it in my journal. Seems more personal to me. It's not like I've written in my journal really since Aki was born. I think I've written in it twice in the last two years. Actually, I don't even know where it's at. Maybe it's packed away at my dad's house with all the other books. Or did I bring it here?

I didn't feel like doing the dishes tonight. Joseph said he would do a load if, and here come the stipulations, I would not log onto MySpace. "Why don't you start a blog?" he said. So here I am. Doing the blog thing. Maybe someday I'll have something important or profound to say, but today, you'll just have to put up with my random ramblings.

Oh, I should note: not only did Joseph do the dishes, but he also made dinner tonight. I told him I was in the mood for his stroganoff. I think he thinks I was playing the "Pregnant Craving" card, but it really did just sound good to me. Maybe it was a craving... Either way, I have an awesome husband!

About this pregnancy thing...apart from feeling tired all the time and suddenly needing to take naps every afternoon this week, I don't feel pregnant. I guess it's a good thing. That's what all my formerly and presently pregnant friends say. They say I should feel so lucky not to be nauseous all the time. But when I was pregnant with Aki, the nausea was part of what made it so exciting. I felt different. I knew I was pregnant, without a doubt. Now, of course, I know I'm pregnant this time around, but it just feels weird. I don't know how else to explain it. I almost feel like I'm lying to people when I tell them our good news. Maybe we're telling them prematurely. Maybe we should've waited a couple more weeks. I mean, at this point I'm just barely pregnant. It's not like there's anything we can do about it now. Our families and most of our friends know now. Of course, so does anybody reading this. Hmmmmmm.

So, what does one in my position have to blog about? I'm not trying anything experimental, like polyphasic sleeping. I'm not really studying anything right now. I mean, my life right now revolves around my growing family and trying to keep the house clean after them. Not that they're really that messy. It's just one toddler and a fully grown man. Nothing like what my mother-in-law has to deal with. She's got a tween, three teenagers and two twenty-somethings living at her house, plus all the other people that are over there all the time, including ourselves. Give me another fifteen years. Then my house will really be as messy as I'll say it is.

I mean, when I was a young, highly opinionated college student I had plenty to say. I just didn't realize there was a medium for it at the time. And would I really have done it? Probably not. No, for me, it takes making a deal with my geeky husband (and I'm using the term "geeky" in the endearment sense) to get out of housework.

I love popping my back! It always feels so good when you can get a good crack out of it. I'm not going to be able to do it pretty soon, but then I'll be able to again. That last sentence reminds me of Luca the Octopus in A Shark's Tale when he says, "Hey boss! Lenny was wearing a disguise so we wouldn't recognize him, but now he's not wearing the disguise anymore, so we do recognize him!" Ugh! I've seen that movie way too many times. In fact, I just noticed the other day as I was in the kitchen that I was lip-synching the words to whichever movie was on at the time. I felt pretty embarrassed for myself. I bet you would too.

The other day I was in the car, and that song "Safety Dance" was on the radio. I started giggling to myself because I thought of Homer doing his version of it singing, "You can dance! You can dance! Everybody look at your pants!" So I decided to sing along using Homer's lyrics and thought it was kinda weird when it sounded like I just sang along with the actual words, so I had to wait until they sang the chorus again. And guess what? Those really are the lyrics! To think, this whole time I thought the Simpsons writers were being so clever with another Homerism. Nope, they really are just silly weird eighties lyrics. It doesn't make me love Homer any less though. I'm glad we named our old cat after him. Good ol' Homer. I miss that kitty.
